Due to temperature fluctuations, water pipes are being damaged and water supply is being disrupted in Calgary. The communities of Abbeydale, Deer Run, University Heights, Skyline West, Banff Trail, Hayesboro and Coral Springs are reporting problems and are facing a water supply crisis. As of 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, the city said that more than 200 homes and about six businesses were experiencing water shortages due to pipe failures.
The city said several communities in the city were the sites of water main breaks and crews were working to restore water supply. The city said water wagons have been deployed to areas where water supply has been disrupted and will ensure that water reaches these areas.
Environment Canada says Calgary is experiencing severe cold weather on Monday and Tuesday. The temperature at the Calgary International Airport on Monday morning was -20 degrees Celsius. By Tuesday, the temperature had risen to -1 degrees Celsius. This temperature fluctuation is causing the pipes to break.
