The Trump administration has revoked the status of refugees who were granted permanent residency in the United States. The travel ban has been lifted for those who were granted permanent residency before the deadline to temporarily suspend the US refugee resettlement program. Thousands of refugees are now stranded in different parts of the world.

The decision was made in an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Monday. It includes more than 1,600 Afghans who were granted permanent residency in the US as part of a program set up by the Biden administration after the US troops withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021.
Afghans who fled after the Taliban seized power had pleaded with Trump on Wednesday to exempt them from the order. They said they risked their lives to support US troops. Approximately 15,000 Afghans are waiting in Pakistan to be resettled in the US.
