Bengaluru: A young man who returned from Dubai has been diagnosed with Mpox in Bengaluru. Reports say that he is currently undergoing treatment at Victoria Hospital. The patient is undergoing further tests. This is the first confirmed Mpox case in Karnataka this year.

The last time a patient in Kerala was diagnosed with Mpox was in December last year. A Thalassery native who had returned from the UAE was infected at that time. The initial symptoms of Mpox infection are fever, severe headache, swollen glands, back pain, muscle pain and lack of energy. Blisters and red spots start appearing on the body within a week of the onset of fever. Blisters are most common on the face and limbs. Apart from this, they are also found on the palms of the hands, genitals and eyes. Mpox is spread by people who come into close contact with infected people without following the prescribed safety measures.

Mpox is not an airborne disease like Covid or H1N1 influenza. The risk of infection is high through face-to-face contact with an infected person, direct skin-to-skin contact, sexual contact, body fluids, respiratory droplets, contact with bedding and clothing, and non-compliance with safety measures.
