Alberta Health Services (AHS) has ordered the closure of Ho Won restaurant in Calgary’s Chinatown due to a cockroach infestation. AHS said the Ho Won restaurant, located on 2 Avenue SE, was found to have a large infestation of cockroaches. The notice to close was issued on Jan. 17. The action comes after inspectors found numerous violations after six inspections of the restaurant between February 2022 and January 2025.
The notice states that cockroaches, along with their droppings and eggs, were found on the restaurant’s glue boards, walls and other equipment. These are among the violations listed. AHS says there was a gap under the exterior door through which the cockroaches entered. The restaurant also said there was no pest monitoring program.
In addition to the cockroach infestation, multiple violations were found, including soiled rags on food contact surfaces, food stored directly on the floor in a walk-in cooler, and cracked floors and ceilings. AHS recommended that the restaurant complete a thorough cleaning and integrated pest management program before it reopens.
