A new revelation has emerged in the case of a British woman and her partner who were found dead in a villa in Vietnam last month. Reports say they died from drinking tainted limoncello. Greta Marie Otteson (33) and Arno Quinto Els (36) were found dead in their Silverbell Villa in Hoi An on December 26. The couple had been engaged for weeks before their deaths. They had come for a holiday.
Vietnamese police have confirmed that Otteson and Els died from methanol poisoning from homemade limoncello, UK media reports. The couple, who had ordered two bottles of limoncello from a restaurant on Christmas Eve, drank the alcohol and later died. The bar owner and bystanders reportedly tried to take the couple to hospital after feeling unwell after drinking the alcohol, but they refused. The name of the restaurant has not yet been released. Vietnamese police said no arrests had been made in the incident.
On November 20, 2024, six young men aged 19 and 20 died in northern Laos after drinking alcohol containing methanol. Following this, Canada has also issued a warning to travelers.
