US President Donald Trump said that he believes that India will reduce tariffs on American products. Trump warned that if India significantly reduces tariffs, he will impose the same tariffs on them on April 2. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump referred to April 2 as 'America's Liberation Day'. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also joined Truth Social. According to a Bloomberg report, India is considering reducing tariffs on US imports of automobiles, agricultural goods and chemicals.

Trump has repeatedly called India a "tariff king" and an "abuser" of trade relations. The average tariff rate imposed by India on imported goods is the highest in the world. The US's average tariff is 2.2%, China's is 3%, and Japan's is 1.7%. According to the World Trade Organization, India's average tariff is 12%.
