Alberta’s population is booming compared to the rest of Canada. About 170,000 new residents moved to the province last year. At the beginning of last year, Alberta’s population was 4,791,876. Statistics Canada reports that the province’s population has grown to 4,960,097 by January 1, 2025. This is an increase of 3.45 per cent.

The report shows that interprovincial migration is the main reason for Alberta’s population growth. 36,082 people moved to the province from other provinces and territories. While this is a slight decrease from 42,243 in 2023, Alberta remains a popular destination for immigrants looking for a new home.

International immigration has also played a major role in Alberta’s rapid growth. This year, 483,591 permanent residents arrived in Canada, the highest number since 1972. Alberta welcomed 66,359 international immigrants, a record number higher than any other province.
