NDP leader Jagmeet Singh makes new promises in the health sector. Jagmeet Singh said that the health sector will be strengthened by hiring 35,000 nurses by 2030. His statement was made while participating in an election campaign rally in Toronto.
Singh promised to ensure safe working conditions for nurses and an appropriate ratio between nurses and patients. But he did not want to specify what the ratio would be. An NDP party spokesperson later said that he would work with various provincial governments on this issue. Singh criticized the provincial governments for using private nursing agencies. He accused them of creating a two-tier system. He also promised better compensation for nurses in the public system. Jagmeet Singh clarified that while hiring employees in the healthcare sector is a provincial responsibility, there are plans to put conditions on the funds transferred to the provinces for healthcare.
