Washington: US President Donald Trump heaped praise on Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Meloni is the first European leader to meet with Trump to discuss trade after the tariffs were imposed. Meloni visited Washington on Thursday. The visit came as a significant step in the ongoing trade war between the US and the European Union. During a speech in the Oval Office, Trump praised Giorgia Meloni and accepted an invitation to Rome.

Trump told reporters at the White House that he liked her a lot. The praise was in the presence of Giorgia Meloni. Trump added that she was the prime minister of Georgia and was leading Italy very well. He knew Giorgia was very capable, she was one of the real leaders in the world. Trump also stated that the US has a great relationship with her.
Meanwhile, Georgia Meloni condemned Trump's decision to impose a 20 percent tariff on exports from the European Union. He later suspended the move for 90 days. Despite the setbacks caused by the tariffs, Georgia Meloni has sought to maintain her relationship with the US president. The Italian prime minister said she would not have come here if she had not been considered a reliable partner.

Georgia will also hold talks with US Vice President J.D. Vance in Italy. The talks are expected to focus on tariffs and defense spending. Earlier, Georgia was the only European leader invited to Trump's inauguration on January 20. Italy shares the US position on several key issues, including immigration and Ukraine.
