California: Creating an account on Instagram by giving a fake age will no longer be so easy. The parent company Meta has taken a big step to make the social media platform Instagram more secure. Meta is now using artificial intelligence to detect real age on Instagram.

If any user on Instagram says that they are over 18, they will now be monitored. Meta's move is to use AI technology to understand whether the user's stated age is real or if they are faking a higher age to access certain content.

The AI estimates the age of the user by looking at their photo, facial features, activity, and time spent on the app. If Instagram suspects someone's age, it will ask for a face scan of the user or any government proof of age. If the user's actual age is below 18, their account will automatically become a teen account.

What is a teen account?

Teen accounts on Instagram are completely private. This means that the user's profile, photos, and posts are only visible to people they know or follow. Apart from this, no one can send any messages to teens without permission. Instagram keeps such accounts away from sensitive content. Videos and posts related to topics such as fights, hate speech, and cosmetic surgery are rarely shown.

Not only that, if a teen spends more than an hour a day on Instagram, they will be sent a reminder and will be put in sleep mode from 10 pm to 7 am. During this time, they will not receive any notifications so as not to disrupt their sleep.

Meta and other social media companies also believe that children's online safety should not be their sole responsibility. That's why these companies want app stores to verify the age of users. The goal is to prevent children under the age of 13 from easily accessing Instagram or any other social media platform like it.

Recently, there have been allegations that social media platforms are not taking child safety seriously. With this new AI technology, Meta has made it clear that there will no longer be any compromise on children's digital safety. So if you or any teenager you know is on Instagram, remember, it's not as easy as it used to be to use Instagram by lying.
