A Yemeni man arrested by the RCMP on charges of attempting to leave Canada to join a terrorist group has appeared in court. The man, identified as Husam Taha Ali al-Sawai, was arrested on April 19 and has remained in police custody since then.
He appeared in court as part of a bail hearing. He has not been charged with any crime. Instead, Crown prosecutors asked the court to grant him a peace bond to restrict his movements in the interests of public safety. The RCMP announced his arrest in a news release that did not name al-Sawai or the terrorist group he is alleged to have tried to join. News organizations are prohibited from reporting further on al-Sawai until May 8, when his bail application is considered. Police reportedly believe there are reasonable grounds to suspect that al-Sawai may commit terrorism-related crimes.
