A total of more than $9.5 million has been awarded to 155 women in Alberta City in a sexual harassment lawsuit. The settlement, which the law firm claims is one of the largest individual settlements in Canadian legal history for sexual harassment in the workplace, is among the largest in the history of Canadian law. The law firm representing women who filed a lawsuit against an Alberta municipality alleging sexual harassment, harassment and discrimination has announced that it has awarded more than $9.5 million to 155 women.
The lawsuit was filed by two female firefighters from the Leduc Fire Department south of Edmonton, alleging that they were subjected to physical and sexual assault, harassment and intimidation while on the job in 2022. The court ruled in their favor. In January 2024, the mayor of Ludek also apologized to the victims of the harassment. The municipality also announced that it was preparing to make significant changes to create safe working conditions in the wake of the court ruling. These include measures to ensure mental health and safety, mandatory training, and workplace investigations. We recognize the profound impact this issue has had. We have learned a lot from this experience. We will continue to take steps to create a respectful and safe environment for everyone, the municipality said in a statement.
