Airbags are being stolen from older Honda Civics parked outside in Ottawa. Ottawa police are warning the public about the issue. The thefts have been mostly reported in the city's East End. Officials say more than a dozen airbags have been stolen from Civics parked outside overnight over the past week. However, owners say the vehicles are not damaged each time the airbags are stolen and no other items have been lost from the vehicles.
The East Neighborhood Resource Team (NRT) said many of the cars had alarms and their doors were locked at the time of the theft. The team also offers some tips to help prevent airbag theft. They include parking vehicles in well-lit, secure areas or garages, considering using a steering wheel lock to deter theft, and installing an alarm system or dash camera with motion detection.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about the theft to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
