The country's business sector is worried after reports emerged that employees at Canada Post may go on strike. Meanwhile, the report said that changes recommended at Canada Post could lead to the termination of part of their daily door-to-door mail delivery. The Industrial Inquiry Commission (IIC) submitted its report on Friday into the labour dispute between the Crown corporation and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW). This comes after IIC Commissioner William Kaplan held hearings in February to review Canada Post’s financial situation and the union’s negotiations for job security and full-time employment.

Kaplan concluded that the postal service was facing an existential crisis. Kaplan presented some recommendations for negotiations between Canada Post and the CUPW. He suggested that both parties amend their collective agreements. Kaplan also proposed amending the Postal Charter to avoid continuing to make it impossible to meet delivery standards.

This includes phasing out door-to-door delivery of letters to individual addresses and implementing community mailboxes wherever practical. He is also demanding that daily deliveries to businesses be maintained.
