It is common for people to try to smuggle gold, drugs and other items through airports and get caught. However, customs officials say that the illegal trafficking of exotic wildlife is relatively low. The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau has ordered the currently seized animals to be returned to the countries from which they were brought under the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act. The act strictly regulates the trade and import of protected species.
