A city in the country, upset with US President Donald Trump's decisions, has come out in support of Canada. The support was shown by temporarily changing the name of Church Street in the city of Burlington, Vermont, to Canada Street. Church Street is a popular street with a variety of shops, restaurants and marketplaces. Local councilors voted to rename this street to Canada Street. This name will remain until September 1, Labor Day.
Trump's decision to make Canada the 51st state of the United States and his tariff policies have sparked protests among Canadian citizens and some sections of the United States. Canadians have been canceling their vacations to the United States in protest. Some have expressed concern about increased border security.
Burlington City Councilor Becca Brown McKnight said the significant drop in cross-border travel has had a negative impact on the city's economy, as 15 percent of downtown business revenue comes from Canadian tourism. Becca Brown added that 750,000 Canadians visit Vermont each year, more than the state's population of about 650,000.
