As Canada, like the US, is tightening its immigration policies and increasing security at its borders, the number of asylum applications from the US is also on the rise. In the first six days of July, Canadian officials at the St. Bernard-de-Lacol border crossing, the busiest land port between New York and Quebec, received 761 asylum applications.

According to the Canada Border Services Agency, this is a more than 400 percent increase compared to the same period a year ago. The number of claims at the crossing increased by 128 percent in June, up 82 percent from the beginning of the year.

The influx of refugees into Canada comes amid President Donald Trump’s new moves to tighten immigration controls. In recent months, US authorities have stepped up immigration detention and withdrawn temporary humanitarian programs, which have led to migrants entering the US as refugees in other countries. For years, the US has allowed hundreds of thousands of people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, Venezuela and other countries to live and work in the country. But since Donald Trump came to power, the rules have been tightened. Trump's statements and immigration laws have forced a mass exodus of illegal immigrants and foreign nationals from the country.

According to statistics, the largest number of asylum seekers at Canadian land crossings are currently from Haiti and Venezuela. Officials say that asylum applications are piling up at the crossings, including from countries such as Colombia and Pakistan, as well as US citizens.
