The central government has again clarified that Aadhaar card, which is one of the most important and basic documents in India, is not a proof of citizenship. Also, the Center is putting forward a note on each copy of the document stating that Aadhaar is not "citizenship" but a proof of "identity".
The Election Commission of India (ECI) had pointed out in the Supreme Court on July 10 that Aadhaar does not validate the citizenship of any person. Below is a list of documents that the Government of India considers as proof of citizenship.
1. Indian Passport
Many people see a passport as an essential travel document. It is not just a travel document but an Indian passport is one of the proofs of citizenship of the country. An Indian citizen can claim their identity as a citizen of the Republic of India through a passport
2. Birth certificate
A birth certificate is a basic document issued by the authorities after a child is born. Place of birth may be recorded on it. According to the Birth and Death Registration Act, 1969, a person who receives this document can treat it as proof of citizenship.
3 Voter ID
Although there is no minimum age limit for birth certificates and passports, a voter ID can only be obtained once the individual reaches the voting age. Voter Card or Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) can be produced to declare Indian citizenship.
