The British Columbia government has announced that it has begun taking steps to cope with the dry weather during the summer season. As part of this, the government has asked the public to reduce water use in the province as much as possible. Water, Land, and Resource Stewardship Minister Randeen Neal made the request to the public at a news conference on Monday.

The ministry says most weather stations across the province are reporting below-normal water levels. The first phase includes voluntary conservation. But Neil explained that when stream flows decline to critical levels and vulnerable species are at risk, regulatory measures should also be considered. The minister clarified that conservation orders are always issued as a last resort, but they may be necessary to protect critical fish and aquatic ecosystems.
