A Quebec woman who married a terrorist in Syria to join ISIS has pleaded guilty. Oumaima Chouei, 29, has pleaded guilty to supporting the terrorist organization and marrying one of its followers. Federal prosecutors said Chouei is the first person in Canada to be convicted of supporting a terrorist group by marrying an ISIS fighter. She will serve one day in custody in addition to the 110 days she has served in pre-trial detention and will be on probation for three years. As part of her plea, three other terrorism-related charges were stayed.

The Public Prosecution Service, which has questioned Chouei for the past 30 months, concluded that she is not likely to reoffend and is not a danger. The RCMP shared the same assessment. Chouei is not known to have directly participated in fighting or other violent activities. They returned to Canada from a detention camp in Syria in October 2022. They were released on strict bail in January 2023 and are currently undergoing therapy to help them overcome their radical ideas.
