Retired Dr. Shigeko Kagawa has officially become the oldest person in Japan. Shigeko is 114 years old. The official announcement was made by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.
In 2021, at the age of 109, Kagawa carried the Olympic torch in the Tokyo Games relay. Thus, she became one of the oldest people to carry the Olympic torch.
