New York: Former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has criticized US President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on India. Nikki Haley warned that the alliance with India should not be broken by giving special exemptions to China. Haley was criticizing the US's suspension of tariffs on China for 90 days. She said that giving exemptions to China is double standards and that Trump's move will cause a rift in US-India relations. Haley said that America's enemy China should not be left alone and that relations with an ally like India should not be damaged.

Trump's action is because it buys oil from Russia. However, Haley noted in an interview that China, which buys the most oil from Russia and Iran, was given a 90-day tariff exemption. Haley's argument is that China's global influence can be countered by ensuring a partnership with India. Meanwhile, neither the United States nor Trump has officially responded to Haley's comments.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has said that there is no decision yet on imposing more tariffs on India. Trump said that the decision will be made after discussions with Russia. Russia has condemned the US move against India. India had issued a statement the other day that the US is importing chemical fertilizers from Russia. When asked by reporters in this regard, Trump replied that he was not aware of the US importing chemical fertilizers from Russia.
