Houston: The first human case of New World screwworm infection, a type of flesh-eating parasite, has been reported in the United States, the Department of Health and Human Services said on Sunday. The parasite is commonly found in South America and the Caribbean.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed the infection in a Maryland patient who had returned from El Salvador. The health department said there is currently only a very low risk to public health in the United States.
Screwworm infections are very painful. They enter through cuts in the body. The CDC recommends that if you suspect you have an infection, you should see a doctor immediately. It is dangerous to try to remove them yourself.
