Delhi: Chinese social media platform TikTok's return to India is in the news again. The company has invited applications for two jobs at TikTok's Gurgaon office on professional platform LinkedIn. National media Hindustan Times reported that TikTok has invited applicants for two posts in India - Content Moderator (Bengali) and Wellbeing Partnership and Operations Lead. However, it is still unclear whether the ban on TikTok is being lifted in India.

The TikTok website was inaccessible to some users last week, sparking rumours that the platform was returning to India. However, central government sources have dismissed the indications that the ban on TikTok is being lifted. National media outlets have reported, quoting central government sources, that no order has been issued to lift the ban on TikTok and that the news that the ban on TikTok has been lifted is false. Although some users were able to access the TikTok website, they were unable to log in, upload content or watch videos. TikTok was also not available in various app stores.

Will the ban on TikTok be lifted in India?

In 2020, after the clashes in the Galwan Valley, 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok, were banned in the country. Later, this ban was extended for about five years.

However, India and China are currently looking for ways to cooperate. The Chinese Foreign Minister visited India two weeks ago. India and China are close again following the US's excessive tariff policy. The two countries have agreed to maintain peace at the border, reopen border trade, promote investment and resume direct air connectivity. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. Therefore, it is expected that more announcements on India-China cooperation will be made in the coming days.
