Heavy avalanche on Everest; one climber dead, search for missing continues

 

 

A mountaineer has died in a heavy avalanche on the Tibetan slopes of Mount Everest. The search for the missing continues. News agencies reported that 137 people have already been rescued. More than a thousand climbers are reportedly trapped in the Karma Valley on the Chinese side.

Thousands of people visited Tibet as China began an eight-day holiday from October 1 to mark National Day and the Mid-Autumn Festival. There were also more people climbing Everest than usual.
