California: Diwali Official State Holiday. The bill was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom on October 6. California will officially celebrate Diwali as a state holiday after the signing of Assembly Bill 268. It is a move that is sure to inspire joy and pride across the Indian American community. California is home to the largest Indian American population in the country

The new legislation, authored by Assemblyman Ash Kalra (D-San Jose), makes California the first state on the West Coast to officially recognize Diwali, following similar measures passed by the states of Pennsylvania and Connecticut in recent years.

Kalra, the first Indian American elected to the California Legislature, represents San Jose’s 25th Assembly District. Kalra has long advocated for policies that celebrate cultural diversity and inclusion.

Kalra previously commented that “Diwali reminds us that no matter how dark things may seem, light always triumphs.” With increasing reports of hate, social media trolling, and temple desecration, that statement has rung true for many in the community.
