New York: Indian-origin Nabaroon Dasgupta and Dr. Teresa Puthussery, of Malayali heritage, are among the 22 recipients of the prestigious US MacArthur Fellowship for 2025. The fellowship is one of the most prestigious awards in the US, known as a ‘genius grant’. The winners will be awarded $800,000 (about Rs 6.6 crore).
Nabaroon Dasgupta is an epidemiologist and harm reduction activist at Nunez State University. He lives for his efforts to reduce drug abuse and educate the public scientifically. Several of his projects have had a major impact in the US, most notably the distribution of the drug naloxone.
Dr. Teresa Puthussery is an expert in conservative neurobiology and optometry. By making new discoveries about the process of vision, she is trying to open new ways in the treatment of diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. She is currently an associate professor at the University of California, Berkeley.
