Delhi, October 15, 2025 – The city of Delhi is gasping for clean air, as it has once again been ranked among the top 10 most polluted cities in the world. With the Air Quality Index (AQI) touching 158, residents are facing an "unhealthy" atmosphere, and certain pockets of the city are approaching hazardous levels.

The Numbers That Alarm
In neighborhoods like Anand Vihar, the AQI soared to 347, signaling a grave risk to public health. Experts warn that prolonged exposure to such conditions could lead to respiratory issues, heart problems, and joint inflammation, particularly affecting children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions.

Why Delhi’s Air is Turning Toxic
Several factors have come together to create this toxic cocktail:

  • Vehicular Pollution: Thousands of vehicles clog the streets daily, releasing dangerous emissions.

  • Construction Dust: Ongoing urban development sends fine particulate matter into the air.

  • Stubble Burning: Crop residue from neighboring states drifts into Delhi, further worsening pollution.

  • Waste Burning: Open burning of garbage continues in some parts of the city.

  • Stagnant Weather: Low wind speeds trap pollutants close to the ground, intensifying the problem.

Government Response
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has triggered Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Measures include halting construction, curbing vehicular emissions, banning open waste burning, and stepping up street cleaning. Authorities have urged residents to limit outdoor exposure and wear protective masks.

Health Advisory
Medical experts advise that people with asthma, allergies, or cardiovascular issues avoid venturing outdoors. Using air purifiers indoors and keeping windows closed can help mitigate exposure.

Looking Ahead
With stagnant weather patterns expected to continue over the next few days, air quality is unlikely to improve immediately. Citizens are urged to stay informed through real-time AQI updates provided by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
