Melissa hits Jamaica; 30 dead

 

 

 

The death toll from Hurricane Melissa, which made landfall in Jamaica, has risen to more than 30. Eight people have died in Jamaica and 25 in Haiti. 18 people are missing in Haiti. Most of the deaths in Haiti were caused by collapsed houses in the floods.

The most damage was in western Jamaica. Infrastructure was destroyed. Telecommunications systems and power lines were down. There are reports that many people are trapped in the rubble of buildings.
