Canadians traveling to the UK will now need an electronic travel authorization (eTA). This will come into effect from February 25, 2026. Passengers arriving without an eTA may be refused boarding. The law came into effect earlier this year, but it has not been strictly enforced. This was to give people time to adjust.

It costs around 30 Canadian dollars. You can apply online or through the UK’s official app. Experts warn that you should only use government websites to avoid scams. Once approved, an eTA is valid for two years, or until your passport expires. You can use it to visit the UK multiple times during this period.

Most applications are approved within minutes. However, it can take up to three business days to process. Obtaining an eTA alone does not guarantee entry to the UK. Canadian-British dual citizens must use a British passport or special certificate. Air travelers who are only staying at the airport without going through customs in the UK do not need an eTA.
