The Reserve Bank of India has cut the base interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point (0.25). The repo rate has been reduced to 5.25 percent from 5.50 percent, Reserve Bank Governor Sanjay Malhotra said.

The decision to reduce the repo rate was taken after a three-day meeting of the Reserve Bank's Monetary Policy Committee, which is held once every two months. The repo rate was earlier reduced from 6 percent to 5.50 percent in the previous month. Later, the same rate was maintained.
