The Union Cabinet has approved the nationwide census in 2027. This is the first census to be conducted using digital capabilities. Rs 11,718.24 crore will be allocated for this. The last nationwide census was conducted in 2011. The census, which was scheduled to be held in 2021, had to be postponed due to Covid.
The 2027 census will be the 16th census of India and the eighth census after independence. It provides detailed village, town and ward level data on the housing, amenities, demography, education, economic activities and migration of the people of the country. The process is governed by the Census Act, 1948 and the Census Rules, 1990.
