44% of Indian cities face chronic air pollution problem, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Air (CREA). Out of 4041 cities in India, 1787 have persistent air pollution. The CREA report points out that the government is implementing the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) in only 4% of these severely polluted cities.

In Kerala, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Eluru, Kozhikode and Kannur were selected for the study, but no persistent pollution was found in any of them. CREA based its PM 2.5 levels on satellite data.
