Natalie Ball created a new platform called 'Tribela' out of the realization of how cyberbullying and harmful content on social media affect children. Natalie, who tried to stay away from social media completely after her daughter's ordeal, realized that it caused social isolation. She developed Tribela with the help of experts from the University of Oxford as a way to do this.
Natalie points out that existing major platforms are designed for adults and child safety features are added later. Tribela works on the concept of 'safety-by-design'. Infinite scrolling likes, follower counts, and videos that play automatically, which encourage excessive use, have been eliminated in this app. It also features automatic moderation using AI to block pornographic or violent content.
Tribela aims to be a safe place for children to communicate and engage creatively. Platforms like Tribela offer great promise as countries, including Australia, impose social media bans on children.
