SpaceX's new proposal to launch 1 million satellites into Earth's orbit has caused great concern in the scientific world. Although there are currently about 16,000 satellites orbiting the Earth, more than half of these belong to SpaceX. The goal of this plan is to install huge data centers in orbit for communication facilities. However, researchers warn that launching so many satellites will destroy natural night views and increase space debris.
With more than 140 million pieces of space debris currently in orbit, the new move could complicate future space travel and systems like GPS. In addition to the challenges in space, scientists point out that this plan will have far-reaching consequences for the Earth's atmosphere. The carbon and other gases released during rocket launches can increase atmospheric temperatures and damage the ozone layer.
Although SpaceX introduced this project on the grounds that data centers on Earth are not environmentally friendly, thousands of people have filed complaints with the US Federal Communications Commission against it. Experts warn that the long-term consequences for nature and space should be taken seriously beyond the short-term benefits.
