American Airlines has tightened restrictions on the use of portable chargers during flights. The move is to avoid accidents caused by overheating of lithium-ion batteries. According to the new rule, which will come into effect from May 1, 2026, a person is allowed to carry only a maximum of two portable chargers. Also, the capacity of each charger should not exceed 100 watt-hours (100Wh).

Airlines also recommend that when using chargers on board, they should always be in sight or within reach of the passenger. The new order also states that passengers should not store their power banks in the overhead bins (baggage boxes above the seats) of the aircraft. In addition, there is a ban on charging power banks using the charging ports on the aircraft seats.

The move is part of a safety precaution to ensure that flight crews can quickly intervene if power banks overheat or smoke. American Airlines is implementing these changes in line with new safety standards from the International Civil Aviation Organization, a United Nations agency.
