Virginia: A US-born mother who claimed her baby died of suffocation while she was sleeping has been sentenced to prison. The court sentenced Autumn Grace Woods, a native of Nelson County, Virginia, in this tragic incident that took place in 2024.
Although sentenced to 10 years in prison, Woods will have to spend about three and a half years in prison after the sentence is commuted. She pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and aggravated child abuse in court.
The autopsy report shows that the baby, Cyrus James Garfield, was only six weeks old and died of suffocation. In addition, the prosecution pointed to the discovery of old rib fractures on the baby's body as evidence of continuous abuse.
Woods had told police that she had slept with the baby on the sofa and that when she got up later, the baby was not breathing. However, a medical examination revealed that the baby had been brutally abused. The baby's father, Ethan Garfield, is also facing similar charges. His trial is ongoing in court.
