A child who was involved in an accident at Calgary's Mahogany Beach is in critical condition. The child was reported missing in the water at 7:20 p.m. Sunday. Firefighters found the child 43 minutes later at the bottom of the approximately 23-foot-deep lake. The child, who was immediately taken to South Health Campus Hospital, remains in critical condition.

The Mahogany Homeowners Association announced that the beach will be closed until Tuesday morning following the accident. Authorities have warned about the dangers of swimming in areas without lifeguards. With drowning deaths on lakes on the rise, lifesaving society officials have said that adults should be vigilant when children enter the water. Most drowning deaths in Alberta occur between May and September.
