George Mannickarott: A Distinguished Literary Historian and Community Leader Passes Away

The Indo-American Press Club (IAPC) joins the global Malayalee community in mourning the passing of George Mannickarott, eminent Malayalam literary historian, acclaimed writer, socio-cultural activist, and community organizer, who passed away in Houston, Texas, USA.

George Mannickarott was a towering figure in the literary and cultural landscape of the Malayalee diaspora. A passionate advocate for Malayalam language and literature, he dedicated his life to documenting, preserving, and promoting the literary contributions of Malayalees in North America.

In recognition of his outstanding literary contributions, he was honored with the First IAPC Literary Excellence Award (Prathama Sahithya Prathibha Puraskaram) during the 6th International Media Conference of the Indo-American Press Club. His lifelong commitment to literature and cultural engagement earned him admiration across generations of readers and writers.

Among his most significant achievements was the publication of “American Aadhunika Malayala Sahithya Charitham (The History of Malayalam Literature in America)” in 2007, a pioneering work that chronicled the evolution of Malayalam literary expression in the United States. The book was shortlisted for the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 2008, placing it among the final selections considered for national recognition. It remains the first comprehensive history of Malayalam literature produced outside Kerala, marking a milestone in the global journey of the language.

To make this landmark work accessible to a wider audience, an English translation was recently published through the efforts of Ginsmon Zacharia, Founder Chairman of the Indo-American Press Club, along with Asha Benno. Released in Houston just two months ago, the English edition is expected to serve as a valuable resource for researchers, students, and libraries interested in diaspora literature and cultural studies.

George Mannickarott authored nine books spanning novels, short stories, essays, and literary studies. His notable works include the novels “Jeevithathinte Kanneer (Tears of Life)” (widely regarded as America’s first Malayalam novel, 1982), “Agniyudham ” (1985), and “America” (1994); the short-story collections “Mauna nombarangal” (1991) and “Alalunna Bandhangal (Distant Relationships)” (1993); and essay collections such as “Bodhadhara” (1999), “Urangunna Keralam (Sleeping Keralam)” (2013), and “Maattamillaatha Malayaalikal (Unchanging Malayalees)” (2015).

Beyond literature, George Mannickarott was deeply involved in community leadership and public service. He served as President of the Malayalee Association of Greater Houston, Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee of FOKANA, and chaired several FOKANA Literary Conferences. Throughout his decades of service, he held numerous leadership positions and played a pivotal role in organizing major cultural events, including the Miss Kerala Pageant in Houston.

A dedicated journalist and editor, he published the literary and news magazine “Kerala Nadam” for more than five years and served as chief editor of several important commemorative publications and souvenirs. His encouragement of emerging writers and his impartial support for literary talent earned him widespread respect within the Malayalam literary community.

George Mannickarott leaves behind an enduring legacy of scholarship, cultural leadership, and unwavering dedication to the Malayalee diaspora. His contributions have enriched Malayalam literature beyond geographical boundaries and inspired countless writers, readers, and community leaders.

The Indo-American Press Club mourns this profound loss and extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the countless admirers whose lives he touched through his words, vision, and service.
