The Union Health Ministry has issued a notification that syrups, including cough medicines, should not be sold without a doctor's prescription. Strict restrictions have been imposed on the sale of syrups in the wake of the death of several children in Madhya Pradesh after consuming cough medicines.
With this, syrups cannot be supplied to the needy without a prescription from hospital medicine counters and other drug stores. The Centre has issued a notification excluding syrup category drugs from Schedule K of the Central Drugs Act.
