Earthquake in Venezuela: 188 dead, more than 1,500 injured

 

 

188 people have been confirmed dead in the earthquake that struck the Latin American country of Venezuela. More than 1,500 people are being treated for injuries. Rescue operations are continuing for those trapped in the rubble. Heavy damage was reported in the port city of La Guaira.

More than 250 buildings collapsed here. More than 200 people are reportedly trapped in the rubble. The search for 157 missing people is ongoing. Reports say the death toll may rise further.

The strongest earthquake in a century has hit Venezuela. The first earthquake struck at 6:04 pm local time. The next earthquake, measuring 7.5, struck just 40 seconds after the first earthquake measuring 7.2.
