Ontario Tourism, Culture and Gaming Minister Stan Choe has resigned from the cabinet following allegations that he received $16,000 in hotel expenses for official business while he was a permanent resident of the city of Toronto. The immediate resignation announcement came after fierce criticism from the opposition for misusing public funds. He officially announced that he takes full responsibility for the lapse that occurred to him and has returned the entire amount to the treasury.

Although he has left his ministerial post, he will continue as the member of provincial parliament representing the North Toronto riding of Willowdale. He acknowledged in a statement that it was a hasty decision made considering the late night session of the legislature, but that it was a serious mistake when considered from the perspective of ordinary taxpayers. Audit documents show that some government ministers and MPs who have lived in Toronto and surrounding areas have abused the special law for emergencies to increase hotel bills since 2023. The reason for the public anger is that Stan Cho represents the constituency closest to the legislature among those involved in the controversy.

Meanwhile, other prominent MPs such as Hardeep Grewal, Nina Tangri and Sharmaine Williams have also received large sums of money in similar ways. Premier Doug Ford responded that the minister’s resignation was the right step. He announced that all MPs involved in the controversy would repay the money in full and that the law that allows hotel expenses for those living within a 50-kilometre radius of Queen’s Park would be repealed immediately. The minister’s resignation is just the beginning and that opposition parties strongly demanded that other ministers who have unnecessarily spent taxpayer money also resign.

Liberal Party leader John Fraser accused Progressive Conservative Party members of turning emergency relief provisions into routine luxury. NDP leader Mariette Stiles accused government representatives of taking more than $120,000 in taxpayer money for hotel stays. Green Party leader Mike Shriner also criticized the government for living in luxury with the public's money while ordinary people are struggling to cope with the rising cost of living.
