Clear frameworks needed; Mississauga City Council imposes one-year ban on AI data centres

 

 

City council has approved a resolution imposing a one-year temporary ban on specific artificial intelligence data centres in Mississauga. The resolution was passed unanimously at a council meeting. The council has initiated a comprehensive policy and security standards to regulate the operation of AI data centres. The move by Mississauga City Council is different from the policy approaches in neighbouring cities such as Wagon and Hamilton.

The decision has thrown the future of a massive ‘hyperscale’ data centre project with a capacity of 50 to 100 megawatts, planned to be built near a residential area on the city’s northwest border, into uncertainty. There are concerns that such large centers will require excessive amounts of electricity and water compared to traditional data centers, which will seriously affect local resource availability. In addition, local residents and environmental activists have pointed out that the severe noise pollution and heat increase caused by continuous operations will adversely affect the daily living environment of local residents.

After the vote, the representatives made it clear that precise regulations are necessary to protect the quality of life and health of citizens along with developing infrastructure. The warning of medical experts that relying on fossil fuel plants to meet the additional energy consumption will cause severe environmental pollution was also decisive in the municipality's decision. It is estimated that large-scale technological developments and environmental protection will be a major topic of discussion in the upcoming municipal elections.
