Calgary City Council warns against careless disposal of batteries

 

 

 

The City of Calgary is warning against careless disposal of batteries. The move comes after it was discovered that batteries were improperly disposed of after major fires at the city's Spiehill and Shepherd landfills were caused by improperly disposed batteries.

Batteries can cause sparks or explosions when they are discharged or damaged. Therefore, city hall clarified that they should not be placed in blue, black and green bins and should only be handed over to designated collection centres. Officials pointed out that people should remember that batteries are found in everyday devices such as mobile phones, tablets, vapes, e-cigarettes and smoke detectors.

The recommendation is to store batteries in their original packaging or to affix electrical tape or duct tape to the ends of the battery so that the brand label is not hidden. Store taped batteries in clear, resealable plastic bags. It is also recommended that batteries be recycled only through 'Recycle Your Batteries Canada!', eco-centres and other household waste collection points.

Fires caused by batteries can spread quickly and cause significant damage. The City of Calgary is urging everyone to follow proper procedures to protect the environment and ensure the safety of landfill workers.
