Same flight number, two planes, controller's timely intervention averts major accident

 

 

Two planes flying with the same flight number in Phoenix, USA narrowly escaped a major disaster. The disaster was averted by the timely intervention of the air traffic controller. Both planes took off at the same time with American Airlines flight number 2482.

The confusion was caused by the delay of the flight from Chicago due to bad weather. Before this plane arrived, the airline company had given permission for another plane to depart from Phoenix with the same flight number. With this, two planes arrived in the same airspace with the same call sign and the threat of collision arose.

However, the air traffic controller, realizing the risk, correctly classified the incoming and departing planes and instructed the pilots. He instructed the plane that was coming to land to remain at a higher altitude and the plane that had departed not to fly higher.
