A Canadian man received a huge bill of $1,130 for towing and storage charges for a car he sold 15 years ago. This rare experience happened to Mario Iamundo, a native of Ontario, Canada.
Mario had sold his 2002 Honda CR-V to someone else in 2012. However, neither the person who bought the car nor the people who used it later legally changed the name. After the vehicle was illegally parked, a private towing company seized the car and moved it to their yard. Since Mario’s name is still on the official government records, the company sent him the bill.
According to the Motor Vehicle Act of Ontario, the buyer must complete the name change within six days after selling a vehicle. In addition, the previous owner is responsible for ensuring that the sale information and name change are complete. If the name change is not completed, the previous owner will be responsible for any legal issues and fines incurred by the vehicle.
Experts point out that the way to avoid such traps is to hand over the keys only after ensuring that the name change has been completed when selling vehicles.
