Snow in August! Alberta surprises with 'Surprise Winter'

 

 

Without waiting for the autumn to end, Alberta has unexpectedly arrived at the end of August! The beautiful sight of the mountains covered in white silk amazed locals and tourists alike who woke up on Sunday morning. This 'summer snowfall', which has temporarily avoided big cities and camped only on the high mountains, has turned the mountainous regions into a winter wonderland. The temperature at the center of the Nakiska Ridgetop plunged to minus 0.1 degrees Celsius, recording extremely cold temperatures.

The scenes captured by live cameras at the world-famous ski resorts of Banff Sunshine and Lake Louise create the impression of a snowy dream world. The Facebook post shared by Banff Sunshine has already gone viral on social media. Meteorologists estimate that the snow depth in the Kananaskis region will increase from 2200 meters to 2700 meters in the coming hours.

This sudden snowfall has also started a big discussion about the winter forecast. According to the forecast of the leading weather agency 'OpenSnow', major cities such as Edmonton and Calgary will experience higher than normal temperatures in the coming months. However, the 'Farmers Almanac' warns that the winter of 2026–2027 will be very intense and full of quite diverse changes. Environment and Climate Change Canada has announced that it will soon release a final report explaining what awaits Alberta in September.
