BC orders two private colleges to refund money to two Indian students

The Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) has ordered two private colleges in British Columbia to refund money to two Indian students for failing to provide the promised facilities and education. Pacific Link College in Surrey and Granville College in Vancouver have been asked to refund the money to the students. Rupali from Delhi and Parminder Kaur (not real names) from Punjab have come forward alleging that they were exploited by the colleges.

Rupali came to Canada in June 2023 to study a business leadership program at Pacific Link College. Rupali, who came expecting a better education, did not get the education she expected. Rupali says that she did not receive any orientation, books or college ID when she joined the college. There was only a small two-room facility in a shopping complex. When she was deported from India, the college authorities had promised to help her find employment after completing her course. But Rupali said that there was no such help from the college and that they were exploiting her. She also faced huge financial losses. Her parents spent all their life savings and sent her to Canada for a better future.

Rupali approached the Pacific Link College authorities demanding a refund. But she said that she was shocked when they did not respond to her and also asked her to pay an additional $11,350 for an Ascended scholarship that she had never applied for or received. Meanwhile, advocacy group One Voice Canada intervened and took Rupali's case to the PTIB. The agency reviewed the documents and ordered the college to refund $7,887.50 of the approximately $15,000 Rupali paid in fees on October 23, 2024.
