Australia to crack down on social media

 

 

 

Australia is taking stricter measures to crack down on social media companies. The move comes after the world's first social media ban on under-16s was imposed last year. Australia is preparing to introduce legislation that will include provisions that will allow users to turn off social media companies' algorithms.

Communications Minister Anika Wells, who led the social media ban for children, is also leading the new regulatory measures.

She added that social media companies such as Meta, Google and TikTok will face heavy fines if they do not provide the option to turn off the algorithms.
