2,197 Arrested in Federal Immigration Sweep in New York

New York: A total of 2,197 individuals were arrested during a massive sweep conducted by federal immigration authorities across New York State. The operation focused on New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, and other northern counties.

However, the issue has moved to federal court following the New York government's imposition of strict restrictions on cooperation between local law enforcement and ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) officials. Fifteen county sheriffs filed a lawsuit, arguing that the state lacks the authority to prevent them from voluntarily cooperating with federal immigration officers.

Amidst these developments, the issue of immigration enforcement in New York has evolved into two distinct battles: one involving federal enforcement operations, and the other a legal dispute over the extent of control the Albany government can exercise over elected sheriffs.
